Washington Governor Jay Inslee vowed a massive effort to save the Orca whale population, which includes a $1.1 billion dollar effort to limit whale watching.
"We are undertaking a herculean effort to save these iconic creatures," Inslee said in a statement. "It will take action at every level of the environment across our entire state."
The Orca population in Washington is in critical condition: only 74 individuals remain. Additionally, many of the female whales are now at the age where they are unable to reproduce. Upwards of $300 million of the $1.1 billion dollar effort will go towards improving diets and changing federal rules to reduce the threat of oil spills and remove toxic contaminants.
Hopefully, this effort will bring the whales back to the water.
